Bernd Kussmaul’s career began as a lone fighter in racing; today the 60-year-old runs a company with 60 employees in Weinstadt in Baden-Wuerttemberg. What is made there is somehow difficult to explain; you have to see it. Green Party member of the state parliament Petra Haeffner and around 20 of her guests have now accepted this invitation.

A cutaway model of an Audi RS6 engine is already waiting in the entrance area. This basically began the success story of Bernd Kussmaul GmbH. Founded in 1996 and moved from Winnenden to Weinstadt in 2002, owner and managing director Bernd Kussmaul is now responsible for 60 employees and therefore 60 families. That’s exactly what impressed Petra Haeffner on her first visit in 2018. “It is this mixture of stability, innovation and down-to-earthness that characterizes this family business. At the same time, the Kussmaul factory is a trustworthy partner for car manufacturers in the premium sector with customers all over the world,” says the Green Party member in the Baden-Wuerttemberg state parliament. “I’ve always been very impressed by what there is in the Remstal.”

And that has to be touched, because Bernd Kussmaul focuses primarily on surfaces and their diverse processing options, such as the world’s first illuminated medals for the 2019 World Gymnastics Championships in Stuttgart. An innovation in the sports world made in Weinstadt. One of the company’s successful concepts is to explore new technologies through an extensive network and then let these partners share in the acquired know-how. These medals were created together with the “State Mint of Baden-Wuerttemberg”, which now has the unique selling point of being able to mint 3 millimeters in height in one stroke.

“We have been successful in the niche right from the start and are therefore always recommended as a reliable and trustworthy partner,” reports Bernd Kußmaul to the guests from 27 years of company history. “Even if we are sometimes very courageous and take risks.” Courage pays off. The aim was to create a bicycle weighing less than 5 kilograms for the French luxury brand Bugatti. Bernd Kussmaul’s version weighs just 4.5 kilos. The latest project from the factory on the former Jacobi site in Weinstadt is the implementation of the “Red Dot: Best of the Best Trophy”, the trophy for the most prestigious design award in the world.
